Stop Rainin' Lord is a song first released as a demo take on the 2007 Warren Zevon compilation album Preludes: Rare and Unreleased Recordings.

About the Song Edit

The song describes a man heading down Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania on a winter day near some railroad tracks. Whilst there he hears a tramp singing mournfully about his life. He tells how he worked forty years on those tracks and only ended up as a poor miserable drunk. Heading away from the tracks, the man is still haunted by the words of the hobo as the bum's lyrics run through his head. This is one of Zevon's many songs about poverty, and he would also refer to another place called Mechanicsburg in "The Factory".

I rode down to Mechanicsburg

On a cold and wintry day,

And I heard a tramp by the railroad tracks

And he had these words to say:

"I worked forty years as a fireman boy

On the Pennsylvania line,

And I ended up just a derelict

Drinkin' boone's farm apple wine."

Oh, where can a bum find bed and board?

When you gonna make it stop rainin' lord?

Where can a bum find bed and board?

When you gonna make it stop rainin' lord?

I rode out of Mechanicsburg

On a freight train a half mile long,

But I still think back to the railroad track,

And that hobo's mournful song.

Oh, where can a bum find bed and board?

When you gonna make it stop rainin' lord?

Were can a bum find bed and board?

When you gonna make it stop rainin' lord?

Singing, where can a bum find bed and board?

When you gonna make it stop rainin' lord?

Where can a bum find bed and board?

When you gonna make it stop rainin' lord?

When you gonna make it stop rainin' lord?
